Is there enlightenment on television beyond C-SPAN? There
is in "The
Prisoner," which features Patrick McGoohan as a
recently retired
agent of the British Secret Service. Over the course of 17
exquisitely crafted episodes, we see the character played by McGoohan tested, tricked, manipulated, and psychologically
tortured in an effort to break his sense of self so that
certain information might subsequently be extracted from him.
In this crucible of will, many facets of the trials we all
face are clearly analyzed and presented. This is Primacy
TV. How does it end? Find out.
There is an active almost cult-like following of The
Prisoner. If you want to learn and understand Patrick
McGoohan's work you must see it and think about it for
yourself. Having done so, however, you may want to learn what
others have seen in it as well. An excellent place to begin
that quest is with the
Prisoner
Appreciation Society.
